About The Art

The Art Theatre of Long Beach is a fully accessible, historic, single-screen cinema offering state-of-the-art projection and sound, located in Long Beach, California. The Art Theatre originally opened in 1925 as a silent movie house complete with an orchestra pit and pipe organ. Today, the Art Theatre stands as a cherished cultural landmark, showcasing a diverse array of first-run, independent, and international films. It serves as a dynamic community hub where cinema lovers gather to experience the art of film in an intimate, architecturally significant setting that bridges past and present.

Programming

Film selection at the Art Theatre is guided by a dedicated programming committee, whose deep knowledge and passion for cinema ensure a rich and engaging lineup for our audiences.

  • Films: We present a thoughtfully curated selection of new releases, Oscar® winners, major art house successes, independent features, international films, documentaries, and short films.
  • Retrospectives: Programs that honor landmark films, influential directors, and beloved actors who have shaped the history and craft of cinema.
  • Collaborations: We partner with nonprofits, museums, and educational institutions to host acclaimed filmmakers and emerging artists. These collaborations bring distinguished guests — directors, actors, writers, musicians, and activists — and foster dialogue between cinema and the wider cultural landscape.
  • Education Programs: Outreach initiatives that introduce school-aged children and young audiences to the art of filmmaking, cinematic storytelling, and film appreciation.
  • Special Events: Curated series and one-time screenings that engage with contemporary social and cultural issues, celebrate specific genres, themes, or movements, and offer unique experiences not found in traditional cinemas.
